Leaving the choke on for too long will cause unnecessary engine wear and waste fuel. This is also bad for the environment. Leaving the choke on for longer than necessary will usually make the engine run too fast. This can lead to loss of control, which is especially dangerous when approaching junctions and bends in the road and whenever you need to slow down.

The choke is mainly used during winter to help with starting. The engine needs its fuel to be vaporised in order to burn it. This is done by the carburettor where the fuel is mixed with clean air coming from the air filter, and sent into the pistons to be ignited. One a cold day, the engine can need more fuel than usual to get running - this makes the mixture 'rich', and this is what the choke does.

If you're ever in the situation where you run out of fuel, quickly turn the choke on as the partial vacuum it causes can help pull the last remnants of fuel out of the system that might get you a precious half mile further to a petrol station.
