It&#8217;s very common on agricultural machinery, and its use on tractors, through a rotating shaft, causes frequent injury and even death, so much so that the Health and Safety Executive produces <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hse.gov.uk\/pubns\/ais40.pdf\">guidance material<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">However, on a lorry, it&#8217;s mostly different. Power take off is used to drive hydraulic equipment and there&#8217;s a huge variety of applications:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Bin lorry compactors<\/li><li>Hydraulic truck loader cranes and truck-mounted cranes<\/li><li>Power line maintenance for powering the bucket that lifts the engineer to the line<\/li><li>Car transporter ramps (the ones with two levels)<\/li><li>Container side loaders that self-load containers onto a skeletal trailer<\/li><li>Tipper lorries with hydraulic rams that lift the front in order to tip materials out the back<\/li><li>Lorries with attachments such as augers<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"600\" height=\"340\" src=\"https:\/\/mocktheorytest.com\/resources\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/04\/crane-at-building-site-on-road-600x340.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-4507\" srcset=\"https:\/\/mocktheorytest.com\/resources\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/04\/crane-at-building-site-on-road-600x340.jpg 600w, https:\/\/mocktheorytest.com\/resources\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/04\/crane-at-building-site-on-road-300x170.jpg 300w, https:\/\/mocktheorytest.com\/resources\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/04\/crane-at-building-site-on-road-768x435.jpg 768w, https:\/\/mocktheorytest.com\/resources\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/04\/crane-at-building-site-on-road-1536x871.jpg 1536w, https:\/\/mocktheorytest.com\/resources\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/04\/crane-at-building-site-on-road-2048x1161.jpg 2048w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" \/><figcaption>Truck loader crane at a building site<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">PTO is used where a battery would not have enough power or durability. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The driver switches PTO on using a switch in the cab. The revs should be increased to between 800-1000rpm to give the best performance, unless the unit has automated rpm increase as power is required. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image href=\"https:\/\/dieselnet.com\/tech\/emi_intro.php\">pollution is created as the diesel is used<\/a><\/li><li>It&#8217;s noisier<\/li><li>Increased engine revs lead to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.millerwelds.com\/resources\/article-library\/how-using-pto-equipment-on-your-work-truck-costs-you-in-the-long-run\">more wear and tear on the engine<\/a><\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In some cases, batteries are used instead, for example for a taillift.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\"
