Your MOT centre will be able to tell you about these.<\/p>\n<h2 id=\"the-mot-certificate-will-change\">The MOT certificate<\/h2>\n<p>The design of the MOT certificate now lists any defects under the new categories, so they\u2019re clear and easy to understand.<\/p>\n<p>The service to\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.gov.uk\/check-mot-history\">check the MOT history of a vehicle<\/a>\u00a0will be updated to reflect the changes.<\/p>\n<h2 id=\"some-vehicles-over-40-years-old-wont-need-an-mot\">Some vehicles over 40 years old won\u2019t need an MOT<\/h2>\n<div id=\"attachment_3410\" style=\"width: 560px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-3410\" class=\"size-large wp-image-3410\" src=\"http:\/\/mocktheorytest.com\/resources\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/05\/Porsche-911S-600x360.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"550\" height=\"330\" srcset=\"https:\/\/mocktheorytest.com\/resources\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/05\/Porsche-911S-600x360.jpg 600w, https:\/\/mocktheorytest.com\/resources\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/05\/Porsche-911S-300x180.jpg 300w, https:\/\/mocktheorytest.com\/resources\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/05\/Porsche-911S-768x461.jpg 768w, https:\/\/mocktheorytest.com\/resources\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/05\/Porsche-911S.jpg 1920w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 550px) 100vw, 550px\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-3410\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">This 1977 Porsche would be exempt as it was first registered over 40 years ago<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Cars, vans, motorcycles and other light passenger vehicles won\u2019t need to have an MOT if they\u2019re over 40 years old and have not been substantially changed.\u00a0You can\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.gov.uk\/check-mot-history\">check the date the vehicle was registered<\/a>\u00a0online.<\/p>\n<p>If a car was first registered on 31 October 1978, it won\u2019t need an MOT from 31 October 2018.\u00a0You won\u2019t have to apply to stop getting an MOT for your vehicle.\u00a0However, each time you\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.gov.uk\/historic-vehicles\/renewing-vehicle-tax\">tax your historic vehicle<\/a>\u00a0(even if you don\u2019t pay a fee), you\u2019ll have to declare it meets the rules for not needing an MOT.<\/p>\n<h2 id=\"more-information\">More information<\/h2>\n<p>The\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.gov.uk\/getting-an-mot\/mot-test-fees\">maximum fees<\/a>\u00a0MOT centres can charge won\u2019t change.<\/p>\n<p>In January 2018, the government decided to\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.gov.uk\/government\/news\/first-mot-test-to-remain-at-3-years-to-protect-road-safety\">keep the age a vehicle needs its first MOT at 3 years<\/a>, rather than extend it to 4 years.<\/p>\n<p>You can\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.gov.uk\/mot-reminder\">get a free MOT reminder<\/a>\u00a0by text message or email a month before your MOT is due.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>How does the MOT work?
