If the speed limit is 30mph then advisory 20mph signs are installed (the limits in this case are not mandatory), although it can be gently enforced using <a href=\"http:\/\/mocktheorytest.com\/resources\/what-are-traffic-calming-measures\/\">traffic calming measures<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-large wp-image-2761\" src=\"http:\/\/mocktheorytest.com\/resources\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/04\/school-20mph-advisory-with-wigwag-216x600.gif\" alt=\"school 20mph advisory with wigwag\" width=\"216\" height=\"600\" srcset=\"https:\/\/mocktheorytest.com\/resources\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/04\/school-20mph-advisory-with-wigwag-216x600.gif 216w, https:\/\/mocktheorytest.com\/resources\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/04\/school-20mph-advisory-with-wigwag-108x300.gif 108w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 216px) 100vw, 216px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>In <a href=\"http:\/\/www.northtyneside.gov.uk\/browse-display.shtml?p_ID=519713&amp;p_subjectCategory=755\" target=\"_blank\">North Tyneside<\/a>, for example, the lights flash and the advisory speed limit is in force between 8:15-9:15am and 3-4pm.<\/p>\n<p>The reduced speed in school safety zones mean that pedestrian injuries are less likely, and are less severe in the case of an accident.<\/p>\n<p>The zones can be implemented with minimal disruption: no major road works are required, just signage and road painting. Features suggested for a school safety zone are:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Road signs<br \/>\n<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-2762\" src=\"http:\/\/mocktheorytest.com\/resources\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/04\/school-safety-zone.jpg\" alt=\"school safety zone sign\" width=\"323\" height=\"351\" srcset=\"https:\/\/mocktheorytest.com\/resources\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/04\/school-safety-zone.jpg 323w, https:\/\/mocktheorytest.com\/resources\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/04\/school-safety-zone-276x300.jpg 276w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 323px) 100vw, 323px\" \/><\/li>\n<li>Advisory 20mph speed limit<\/li>\n<li>Text road markings<br \/>\n<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-2763\" src=\"http:\/\/mocktheorytest.com\/resources\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/04\/school-safety-zone-road-marking-300x116.jpg\" alt=\"school safety zone road marking\" width=\"300\" height=\"116\" srcset=\"https:\/\/mocktheorytest.com\/resources\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/04\/school-safety-zone-road-marking-300x116.jpg 300w, https:\/\/mocktheorytest.com\/resources\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/04\/school-safety-zone-road-marking-768x296.jpg 768w, https:\/\/mocktheorytest.com\/resources\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/04\/school-safety-zone-road-marking-600x232.jpg 600w, https:\/\/mocktheorytest.com\/resources\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/04\/school-safety-zone-road-marking.jpg 1000w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/li>\n<li>Traffic calming features such as sleeping policemen, speed tables, speed cushions, chicanes and narrowings<\/li>\n<li>Waiting and parking restrictions &#8211; double yellow lines or no stopping zig-zags; on-street parking should be retained outside the zone on the same side of the road as the school to reduce the need for children to cross the road<\/li>\n<li>Coloured road surfaces panels (now discouraged due to maintenance costs)<\/li>\n<li>Flashing wigwags<\/li>\n<li>Pedestrian crossings<\/li>\n<li>Yellow backing boards (used in moderation)<\/li>\n<li>Cycle facilities (cycle lanes, for example)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>There are other initiatives such as the Safer Routes to Schools zones in Edinburgh where the 20mph are mandatory.<\/p>\n<p>The have other benefits: children must walk the last short distance to school, giving them some exercise.<\/p>\n<p>However, while it seems obvious to people that schools are a danger zone and speeds should be regulated, the majority of accidents with children occur en route to school, but not near the school.
