{"id":2427,"date":"2015-09-07T07:00:48","date_gmt":"2015-09-07T07:00:48","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/mocktheorytest.com\/resources\/?p=2427"},"modified":"2019-02-05T11:20:31","modified_gmt":"2019-02-05T11:20:31","slug":"how-to-become-an-approved-driving-instructor-adi","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/mocktheorytest.com\/resources\/how-to-become-an-approved-driving-instructor-adi\/","title":{"rendered":"How to become an Approved Driving Instructor (ADI)"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>To legally charge anyone (either money or monies worth) for driving instruction in a car you must either\u00a0be on the <abbr title=\"Approved driving instructor\">ADI<\/abbr> register or\u00a0have a trainee\u2019s \u2018licence to give instruction\u2019 issued by the <abbr title=\"Approved driving instructor\">ADI<\/abbr> Registrar.\u00a0You must display your ADI registration certificate or trainee licence while carrying out paid instruction.<\/p>\n<h2>Getting your ADI registration<\/h2>\n<p>You must be 21 or over and have had your driver licence for a manual vehicle for at least 3 years. You can start the application process up to six months before your 21st birthday because it takes at least six months to get your ADI licence, as long as you will have had your full manual car driver licence for at least three years. If you have an automatic car licence because of a disability, please contact DVSA.<\/p>\n<h3>If you&#8217;ve had disqualifications, endorsements or non-driving criminal convictions<\/h3>\n<p>If you have been disqualified from driving or have had six or more penalty points DVSA will consider your application and the circumstances of the disqualification (reason, how long ago it happened, etc).<\/p>\n<h2>Starting the process<\/h2>\n<p>You can start the process of becoming a driving instructor at <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gov.uk\/apply-to-become-a-driving-instructor\" target=\"_blank\">this page<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>DVSA produces a guide to the ADI register which you can download <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gov.uk\/guide-to-the-approved-driving-instructor-register\" target=\"_blank\">here<\/a>. You must acknowledge that you have read this document. It explains\u00a0the qualification and registration process,\u00a0the role and powers of the <abbr title=\"Approved driving instructor\">ADI<\/abbr> Registrar, and\u00a0the role of the Driver and Vehicle Standards Agency (<abbr title=\"Driver and Vehicle Standards Agency\">DVSA<\/abbr>).<\/p>\n<p>You will need to get a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gov.uk\/criminal-record-check-become-driving-instructor\" target=\"_blank\">criminal record check<\/a>\u00a0if the DVSA tool mentioned above requests that you do. This costs\u00a0\u00a36.<\/p>\n<h2>ADI Test Part 1<\/h2>\n<p>Test 1 is the theory test and hazard perception test. It costs \u00a381 from 1 October. It takes about one hour 45 minutes to complete. You can <a href=\"http:\/\/mocktheorytest.com\/highway-code\/adi\/\" target=\"_blank\">practice all the ADI theory questions here for free<\/a>.<\/p>\n<h2>ADI Test Part 2<\/h2>\n<p>You will be assessed on your driving ability including separate assessments of your eyesight and your driving technique. You must pass both parts of the test in the same attempt.\u00a0The test costs \u00a3111. You must have passed part 1 before you can book part 2.<\/p>\n<h2>ADI Test Part 3<\/h2>\n<p>Part 3 assesses your ability to pass on your knowledge to your pupils. The examiner will play the role of a pupil and you will be asked to give practical instruction. The examiner will play the part of a fairly new driver, then a pupil who is about ready to take a test, and finally a pupil who is a qualified driver that wants further training.\u00a0The test costs \u00a3111. You must have passed part 2 before you can book part 3.<\/p>\n<h2 id=\"responsibilities-of-an-adi\">Responsibilities of an <abbr title=\"Approved driving instructor\">ADI<\/abbr><\/h2>\n<p>You\u2019ll be responsible for your own safety, that of your pupil and other road users.<\/p>\n<p>You\u2019ll be expected to show:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>a high regard for all aspects of road safety &#8211; i.e. you&#8217;ll need to know all the road rules and observe them, plus not be seen to be ridiculing rules, ignoring them, encouraging others to ignore them or promoting dangerous driving<\/li>\n<li>a high standard of driving and instructional ability &#8211; you must drive according to the law, and this includes obeying speed limits and mobile phone rules<\/li>\n<li>a professional approach to your customers &#8211; customer service is important as your conduct reflects on other ADIs and DVSA<\/li>\n<li>a responsible attitude to your pupils and profession<\/li>\n<li>that you\u2019re a \u2018fit and proper\u2019 person<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3 id=\"fit-and-proper-criteria\">\u2018Fit and proper\u2019 criteria<\/h3>\n<p>When deciding if you\u2019re a \u2018fit and proper\u2019 person, <abbr title=\"Driver and Vehicle Standards Agency\">DVSA<\/abbr> will check to see if you have:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>had any motoring or non-motoring cautions or convictions<\/li>\n<li>been disqualified from driving<\/li>\n<li>any court proceedings pending against you<\/li>\n<li>any penalty points on your licence<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>You can find out more about the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gov.uk\/government\/publications\/suitability-of-ex-offenders-to-become-or-remain-a-driving-instructor\">suitability of ex-offenders to become an ADI<\/a>.
