If you have to stop on the roadside:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>do not park facing against the traffic flow<\/li>\n<li>stop as close as you can to the side<\/li>\n<li>do not stop too close to a vehicle displaying a Blue Badge: remember, the occupant may need more room to get in or out<\/li>\n<li>you <strong>MUST<\/strong> switch off the engine, headlights and fog lights<\/li>\n<li>you <strong>MUST<\/strong> apply the handbrake before leaving the vehicle<\/li>\n<li>you <strong>MUST<\/strong> ensure you do not hit anyone when you open your door. Check for cyclists or other traffic<\/li>\n<li>it is safer for your passengers (especially children) to get out of the vehicle on the side next to the kerb<\/li>\n<li>put all valuables out of sight and make sure your vehicle is secure<\/li>\n<li>lock your vehicle.<br \/>\n<strong>Laws CUR reg 98, 105 &amp; 107, RVLR reg 27 &amp; RTA 1988 sect 42<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/mocktheorytest.com\/resources\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/03\/highway-code-parking-rule-2391.jpg\" target=\"_blank\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-2064 size-medium\" src=\"http:\/\/mocktheorytest.com\/resources\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/03\/highway-code-parking-rule-2391-300x240.jpg\" alt=\"highway-code-parking-rule-239\" width=\"300\" height=\"240\" srcset=\"https:\/\/mocktheorytest.com\/resources\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/03\/highway-code-parking-rule-2391-300x240.jpg 300w, https:\/\/mocktheorytest.com\/resources\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/03\/highway-code-parking-rule-2391-600x479.jpg 600w, https:\/\/mocktheorytest.com\/resources\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/03\/highway-code-parking-rule-2391.jpg 635w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<h2>Rule 240<\/h2>\n<p>You <strong>MUST NOT<\/strong> stop or park on:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>the carriageway or the hard shoulder of a motorway except in an emergency (see <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gov.uk\/motorways-253-to-273\/stopping-270-to-271\">Rule 270<\/a>)<\/li>\n<li>a pedestrian crossing, including the area marked by the zig-zag lines (see <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gov.uk\/using-the-road-159-to-203\/pedestrian-crossings-191-to-199\">Rule 191<\/a>)<\/li>\n<li>a clearway (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.gov.uk\/government\/publications\/the-highway-code-traffic-signs\">see \u2018Traffic signs\u2019<\/a>)<\/li>\n<li>taxi bays as indicated by upright signs and markings<\/li>\n<li>an Urban Clearway within its hours of operation, except to pick up or set down passengers (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.gov.uk\/government\/publications\/the-highway-code-traffic-signs\">see \u2018Traffic signs\u2019<\/a>)<\/li>\n<li>a road marked with double white lines, even when a broken white line is on your side of the road, except to pick up or set down passengers, or to load or unload goods<\/li>\n<li>a tram or cycle lane during its period of operation<\/li>\n<li>a cycle track<\/li>\n<li>red lines, in the case of specially designated \u2018red routes\u2019, unless otherwise indicated by signs. Any vehicle may enter a bus lane to stop, load or unload where this is not prohibited (see <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gov.uk\/general-rules-all-drivers-riders-103-to-158\/multilane-carriageways-133-to-143\">Rule 141<\/a>).<br \/>\n<strong>Laws MT(E&amp;W)R regs 7 &amp; 9, MT(S)R regs 6 &amp; 8, ZPPPCRGD regs 18 &amp; 20, RTRA sects 5, 6 &amp; 8, TSRGD regs 10, 26 &amp; 27, RTA 1988 sects 21(1) &amp; 36<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2>Rule 241<\/h2>\n<p>You <strong>MUST NOT<\/strong> park in parking spaces reserved for specific users, such as Blue Badge holders, residents or motorcycles, unless entitled to do so.<br \/>\n<strong>Laws CSDPA sect 21 &amp; RTRA sects 5 &amp; 8<\/strong><\/p>\n<h2>Rule 242<\/h2>\n<p>You <strong>MUST NOT<\/strong> leave your vehicle or trailer in a dangerous position or where it causes any unnecessary obstruction of the road.<br \/>\n<strong>Laws RTA 1988, sect 22 &amp; CUR reg 103<\/strong><\/p>\n<h2>Rule 243<\/h2>\n<p><strong>DO NOT<\/strong> stop or park:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>near a school entrance<\/li>\n<li>anywhere you would prevent access for Emergency Services<\/li>\n<li>at or near a bus or tram stop or taxi rank<\/li>\n<li>on the approach to a level crossing\/tramway crossing<\/li>\n<li>opposite or within 10 metres (32 feet) of a junction, except in an authorised parking space<\/li>\n<li>near the brow of a hill or hump bridge<\/li>\n<li>opposite a traffic island or (if this would cause an obstruction) another parked vehicle<\/li>\n<li>where you would force other traffic to enter a tram lane<\/li>\n<li>where the kerb has been lowered to help wheelchair users and powered mobility vehicles<\/li>\n<li>in front of an entrance to a property<\/li>\n<li>on a bend<\/li>\n<li>where you would obstruct cyclists\u2019 use of cycle facilities <strong>except<\/strong> when forced to do so by stationary traffic.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2>Rule 244<\/h2>\n<p>You <strong>MUST NOT<\/strong> park partially or wholly on the pavement in London, and should not do so elsewhere unless signs permit it. Parking on the pavement can obstruct and seriously inconvenience pedestrians, people in wheelchairs or with visual impairments and people with prams or pushchairs.<br \/>\n<strong>Law GL(GP)A sect 15<\/strong><\/p>\n<h2>Rule 245<\/h2>\n<p><strong>Controlled Parking Zones.<\/strong> The zone entry signs indicate the times when the waiting restrictions within the zone are in force. Parking may be allowed in some places at other times. Otherwise parking will be within separately signed and marked bays.<\/p>\n<h2>Rule 246<\/h2>\n<p><strong>Goods vehicles.<\/strong> Vehicles with a maximum laden weight of over 7.5 tonnes (including any trailer) <strong>MUST NOT<\/strong> be parked on a verge, pavement or any land situated between carriageways, without police permission. The only exception is when parking is essential for loading and unloading, in which case the vehicle <strong>MUST NOT<\/strong> be left unattended.<br \/>\n<strong>Law RTA 1988 sect 19<\/strong><\/p>\n<h2>Rule 247<\/h2>\n<p><strong>Loading and unloading.<\/strong> Do not load or unload where there are yellow markings on the kerb and upright signs advise restrictions are in place (see pages 115-116). This may be permitted where parking is otherwise restricted.
